Graduation Announcements – The Missing Information

By Anna Green, April 16, 2010 8:48 am

“You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.” (Tom Brokaw)

Each year, at commencement events all over the nation, graduates are getting advice for going forward. Graduation is a time of looking forward, a celebration of an important achievement, and excitement about the next step and all the possibilities that lie ahead. Graduation announcements are sent and parties planned, with plenty of party ideas all over the web.

But for many, graduation is also a time to pause and take a look back – at not only the teachers, counselors and mentors who provided advice and encouragement but also friends and family who may have been there during the low points, when the future may have looked in doubt. For married students, it may have been the spouse who took on more than his or her share of the load at home or work; for others, it may have been a parent or parents who put off a new car or worked long hours to pay for tuition and books.

The names of these people do not show up on graduation announcement cards and are often in the shadows during the celebrations. There are ways, however, for recognizing these special people. This could include taking the time to pay tribute to them at graduation celebrations with a special toast or small gift, writing personal notes of appreciation, planning special dinners or recognizing them in non-traditional graduation announcements such as an online graduation announcement .

No matter what the method, it’s good to remember that while graduation is certainly a time for looking forward, it’s also an opportunity for looking back and remembering.
