Keeping the School Yard Clean

By James, August 3, 2010 6:04 pm

One of the biggest problems with running a school, college, university or other educational establishment is keeping the grounds tidy and litter-free. Schools and colleges can very quickly become untidy, partly because they house hundreds of young people with appetites for crisps and snacks.

Most of this rubbish is responsibly discarded in the school litter bin, however, in some schools and colleges. Headmasters and principles find certain areas become littered very quickly.

Often the playground or school yard and playing fields are quite susceptible to litter, with crisp bags and sweet wrappers quite often blowing across these areas. While there is much a headmaster and principle can do to ensure that pupils and students always use the school litter bins when necessary, solving the problem often takes more than threats of detention.

By and large, people – even students – would like to throw their rubbish away sensibly but it is often the size and logistic location of the school litter bins that causes the problem.

One of the major causes of littering in schools and indeed other places outside of educational establishments, is simply down to the lack of  litter bins. People will walk a good few yards to dispose of their litter, however, if that journey turns to a ten minute or an amble up stairs and around a corridor, the temptation to throw the litter on the floor can often be too strong.

Also litter bins that fill too quickly are also a cause for littering as people will continue to use a bin, even though it is overflowing and a full bin becomes nothing more than a pile of litter. It can also help to ensure you have the right school litter bin for the area. A small bin next to the vending machines will quickly fill while a litter bin placed in a quiet corridor can go unused for days.

Ensuring that there are enough bins in enough locations and they are the correct size will go a long way to ensuring that pupils and students are not littering but are using the school litter bins provided.

By assessing the number of school litter bins and their location and size can quite often reduce the amount of litter suffered by the school or college and will help to make the environment a better place to work and learn for all.

Richard N Williams is interested in waste bins and rubbish removal. Please visit us website if you are interested in school bins or other waste bins.

Various Ways to Pay Your Student Loans

By Anna Green, July 26, 2010 4:41 pm

The common problem of most people nowadays is repaying debts. Student loan for example is one of the common burdens for every family. We all know that this type of loan can give assistance and benefits to our children’s educational needs. However, paying these loans can be rigid due to its interests. On the other hand, many options can resolve this problem easily and efficiently. These repayment options are somehow fair to put in effect. Various repayment options like refinancing and schedule adjustments can still make a way in utilizing your student loan debt.

Requesting for a deferment from your lender can help you find solutions if you are having a rigid moment in paying the loan once you graduated. This type of push back will not require you to pay within six months. It is a smart move in order to exhaust your deferment options before asking for forbearance. With deferment request, the interest is not capitalized onto the loans principal. After utilizing your available deferment time, do not hesitate on consolidating your student loans debts with a refinance loan. This can simplify your student loan payments for the reason that you are only bound to single payments every month rather than multiple ones.

Consequently, if you do not want to avail a consolidation loan, you may want to try to find other payment options that your lender may offer. It includes interest-only payments, reduced payments and income sensitive payments. These student loans payment options can reprieve you from the laborious process of paying your debt. Moreover, you are able to recompose yourself and save some money for future costs. We know that finding and applying for a job is a hard thing to do. Some newly graduated students out there achieved high degree in a particular course. Therefore, most companies nowadays would prioritize those applicants. DU Sets Up Quality Assurance Cell

By Anna Green, July 15, 2010 7:19 pm

Delhi University’s Academic Council (AC) has rejected the proposal of getting DU-affiliated colleges accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The members of the council feel that the accreditation would ‘adversely affect’ some colleges of DU. Also, a large number of academics feel that the NAAC methodology is too general and cannot be applied to DU colleges.

“NAAC assesses colleges on parameters such as infrastructure, research, faculty, etc, and on the basis of it provides ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ rankings. Based on the rankings, a college receives grants. Colleges with lower ratings are at a disadvantage and get lower grants from the University Grants Commission (UGC),” said Abha Dev Habib, member of AC. NAAC accredits colleges on the basis of seven parameters: curricular aspects; teaching-learning and evaluation; research, consultancy and extension; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progression; governance and leadership; and innovative practices.

Instead of the NAAC accreditation, the university has passed a proposal to set up its Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Although the cell would assess colleges on the similar parameters set by NAAC, the university feels that the cell will prevent from creating differences among colleges. At a time when the government is planning to set up a single regulatory body instead of multiple bodies, the rejection comes as a blow to NAAC.

“If not NAAC, we still have to go for some other quality assurance. Universities across the world subscribe to accreditations as it helps them assess their strengths and weaknesses. Delhi University’s internal cell will evaluate a college’s performance on the basis of certain set parameters,” informed Deepak Pental, vice-chancellor, DU.

Further, SK Garg, principal Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, added, “The NAAC accreditation is meant for new institutions. But DU has several old colleges of reputation, which do not fulfill certain criteria set by NAAC. For example, some DU colleges — of high academic standard — operate from dilapidated buildings. If those colleges go for the accreditation, they are bound to be ranked low due to their poor infrastructure.”

Learn About GI Bill Military Financial Assistance?

By Onslow, July 12, 2010 1:15 pm

Most Americans, civilians and members of the Armed Forces, share the belief that getting a college education is among the goals we hope to accomplish in our lifetimes. And for many of us, we would like to ultimately complete a program that results in a degree or certification that will enhance our personal and professional development. However, the reality is that the cost of higher education is continuing to go up, and even attaining a combination of grants, loans and scholarships just isn’t enough to cover all of the associated expenses. In support of those who serve our country and their family members, the Military developed the GI Bill to provide financial assistance for the pursuit of education. First adapted back in 1944, the GI Bill has become a well-known and frequently utilized source of money for those currently serving and who have served in the Armed Forces so that they have the option of furthering their education. In lieu of college, the Bill can also be used toward vocational training, job placement, and technical training. The GI Bill will generally cover up to 36 months of schooling, which is equivalent to eight semesters or four years of college education. While the amount of compensation varies, on average, it is approximately $1,034 per month, and about $840 per month for those who served in the military for two years or under. These rates apply to those students who are attending school or training programs on a full-time basis. Individuals who are only enrolled part-time, the financial compensation is less. For example, part-time students who served in the Military for at least two years will receive $517 each month for expenses, while those with less than two years of service can expect a monthly payment amount of $420. A veteran typically has between 10 and 14 years to use his or her benefits awarded under the GI Bill. If not used by the said deadline, he or she will lose those benefits. In order to be eligible for Military financial assistance through the GI Bill, certain requirements must be met. For one, you must be active within a branch of the US Military (i.e. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard) or be enrolled in the reserves for a specified period of time. Since there are various forms of the Bill, it will depend on which one you are looking to qualify for. To receive minimum benefits, most require you to serve for at least two years on active duty, and three years or more to receive the maximum amount. An enrollment period of six years with the United States Reserves typically applies for reservists looking to obtain benefits. Before using your GI Bill or taking any classes, it’s always a good idea to consult with your Education Service Officer of Navy College representative. They have the training to help you make the most of your benefits. For comprehensive details regarding the Bill, contact the United States Department of Veteran Affairs. Just do it

By Anna Green, July 9, 2010 11:09 am

I can never talk (or write) about Distance Education, and Sikkim Manipal University Directorate in Distance Education in particular, without giving a reference to my close friend Anand.

Anand comes from a decent background. His father, now retired, worked in a state department. He is the eldest of the three brothers. He had some expectation from life, just the way we have. He enrolled for an engineering course as most of the people aiming for a corporate career in late 90s and early 2000s did.

He was doing well for himself chasing his dreams.

But dreams have a habit of turning sore especially when you are not watching.

His father was implicated in a corruption case (After a 3 year long legal battle, he was proved not to be guilty). His brother met with an accident. His youngest brother had to be sent to the village.

Anand started crumbling under pressure. His grades slipped. He was asked to repeat the semester. With no bread winner in the family and he being the eldest had to quit his engineering course mid way.

Anand went to Delhi. He took any job coming his way. His first job paid him Rs 20 per hour. He lived in shabby conditions.

Life had changed for Anand. But his dreams had not.

He slogged in Delhi for 2 years. By this time his father was cleared of the corruption charges. His brothers were doing well again.

But, Anand was still not a graduate. This was hampering his career progress.

In every office he tried, he was offered less than any person doing the same job because he was not a graduate. He could not have left his job to do a full time program. And moreover he was still interested in the IT/ITeS sector.

At that time he decided to enroll for SMU-DE B.Sc. IT program. He completed this 3 years course in 4 years. He was able to time it as per his own convenience as he even got the extra facility of online learning called Edunxt from their website www.smude.edu.in.

On 5th Spetember this year he completed his B.Sc. IT degree. By Diwali he had changed his job. Today his take home is 12K.

Starting from 20Rs per hour to 12K p.m. is a journey he covered in 6 years.

Come to think of it, it is a 25% year-on-year growth.

Now, Anand plans to do an MBA in systems from SMU DE.

His train may have got delayed but it is still on tracks.

This is why I think DE has a very important role to play in a developing economy like India. There may be millions like Anand. Those who could not have the kind of education they liked. But they are ready to work hard.

But they are living their lives in constraints. Probably many of us could relate to these constraints, but many may not be.

If India has to become a super power then we need to help “such” people move up on the value chain. If we can develop our courses in a way which make people like Anand more employable then I believe we would have done our job.
