StudentScholarships.org – Career in Psychology

By James, March 4, 2010 8:18 am

How much do you love your job? Simply making money is probably not enough to give you a sense of contentment. When I picture my dream job, I see myself making a difference in our world rather than bringing home ludicrous amounts of money. I want to be as proud of my job in the future as I am of my high school career now, and I believe that studying psychology will prepare me for a fulfilling future. My dream job will make me happy because I know that I will be working hard to help someone every day.

The Conference Board released a survey in February which stated that job satisfaction has declined in the last nine years. Seventeen percent of people making less than $15,000 a year say they are very satisfied with their jobs, whereas only fourteen percent of those who make over $50,000 were satisfied. Although the incomes of professional athletes have soared, the prestige of their jobs has fallen. I am going to get satisfaction from the goals that I accomplish in my career, not from my paycheck.

I am pursuing a career in the field of psychology in order to touch the lives of others. Nothing gives me more enjoyment than helping someone through a difficult time. Even in elementary school I desired to assist others; I nearly cried when I didn’t get the chance to be the advice columnist of our little newspaper. I managed to survive the heartbreak, but the urge to comfort others still resides within me to this day. My dream job will satiate that that need.

Finally, I will not dread going to work every day. I won’t be stuck in a job that is only useful because it pays the bills. Of course I know that there will be difficult days, but the satisfaction I will get from my job will far outweigh the discontent of certain days. I refuse to settle for anything, especially something as important as my career. I enjoy working hard if I am able to see the impact of that hard work, and I feel that a job in the psychology field will be challenging and rewarding for me.

My ideal job is one in which I am happy, regardless of the size of my paycheck. Instead of simply earning money, I will be earning the respect of others and a sense of pride for what I do. I will enjoy asserting myself because I know that I will have the power to positively affect the lives of others. I will love my job because I will be making a difference.
