A university is an organized governing body which looks after the higher educations. The CCS University (Chaudhary Charan Singh University) is the best among bunch of universities in Meerut and was established in the year 1966. It has been named after the then Prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, who belonged to this region of the country. This university was formerly known as Meerut University. Since 1966 it has been imparting knowledge in various fields to the students enabling them to know about true knowledge. The University celebrated its silver jubilee in 1991. Presently, it is one of the premier educational institutions of the country encompassing a vast, beautiful and pollution-free campus which sprawls over 222 acres of land having vast playgrounds and experimental fields, botanical garden, etc.

Besides Universities Meerut has got some reputed technical colleges. MIET (Meerut Institute of Engineering and Technology ) commonly known as Meerut Institute of Technology is rated among the best in the country. It is affiliated under the Utter Pradesh Technical University (UPTU). MIET offers degrees in pharmaceutical sciences, all technical branches and also IT education. It has excelled to the task of imparting quality education in these fields and also providing placements to its fellow students.

Andhra University [Also known as Andhra Viswa Kala Parishad] which is located in Visakhapatnam was established in the year 1925. It is one of the oldest premier universities in India. It is the first university in India to offer an Under Graduate program from 1957. There are 5 districts that are affiliated to Andhra University such as Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram. The College of Arts & Commerce is the biggest college in the University.

It was headed by the Vice-Chancellors Dr. Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy from 1926 to 1931 and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan from 1931 to 1936. The present Vice-Chancellor for Andhra University is Dr. Beela Satyanarayana.

Infrastructure

The University has more than 100 buildings in the surroundings of Kailasagiri Hills. There are 19 hostels for men, 4 hostels for women and 340 Staff quarters that university provides. The University contains two sections, South Campus & North Campus in which the south campus has Art & Science departments, administrative block and the North campus has engineering college. The University of Delhi was established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university under the Act of the Central Legislative Assembly. Initially, there were only three colleges, namely- St. Stephens College, Hindu College and Ramjas College that were affiliated to the University. There were only two faculties (Arts and Science) and about 750 students. In October 1933, the University offices and the Library shifted to the Viceregal Lodge Estate, and till date, the same is the main campus of the university. It is one of the most reputed Universities in India.

To cope with the increasing demand, University initiated a new organizational scheme based on the multi-campus concept during seventies. University was divided into two separate campuses- South and North. In 1973, South Campus started postgraduate programmes in some departments of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in a rented accommodation. After sometime, the campus acquired land near Dhaula Kuan where the building of Arts Faculty was first constructed. Offices and teaching activities shifted to this campus in 1983. Out of a total of 18 Centres of Advanced Studies, 6 were chosen from Delhi University by the University Grants Commission in the early sixties. These were in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Economics and Sociology. Now, these centres are amongst the pioneers in teaching and research in their respective areas. It is one of the popular Universities In Delhi.

The University has 15 libraries, apart from the individual college libraries. The University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) has a number of sophisticated research instruments which are being used by several departments of the University and by other institutions in Delhi. The DU has also recently completed the implementation of fibre-optic networks on the North and South campuses.

The University of Delhi offers various programmes under different faculties, such as English, Hindi, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Political Science, History, Commerce and Mathematics at both undergraduate and masters level. The admission procedure of the university generally starts in the month of June every year and the session starts from July onwards. To apply for the courses, students have to fill in a Centralized Admission Form..Admission to the colleges affiliated to the University is strictly on the merit basis, although some colleges do have an interview round, besides the regular qoutas like SC/ST, Sports, etc. Cut-off lists of every college are decided and declared individually once the applications procedure is over.

Those who are unable to get admission in the regular courses of the University of Delhi can apply for admission to the ‘School of Open Learning’ of the university. The classes of Open learning are generally held on weekends or public holidays.

The University of Delhi is the premier university of the country and is known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty.

In October 1933, the University offices and the Library shifted to the Viceregal Lodge Estate, and till today this site is the nucleus of the University (Main Campus).

Over the last even decades the University has grown into one of the largest universities in India. At present, there are 14 faculties, 86 academic departments and 79 colleges spread all over the city, with about 2,20,000 students.

In an effort to cope with this enormous expansion, the University in the early seventies initiated a new organizational pattern based on the multi-campus concept. The South Campus made a beginning in 1973 by starting postgraduate programmes in some departments of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in a rented building. A beginning has been made towards establishing the East and West Campuses of the University of Delhi.

The East Campus is being developed with the University College of Medical Science as its nucleus, while the West Campus will have as its focus on Engineering and Technology. The University has just completed the implementation of fibre-optic networks on the North and South Campuses.

The university got the much-awaited approval for the semester system from its academic council (AC) on Friday, clearing the way for its implementation at the undergraduate level from the 2010-2011 academic session. The AC meeting debated the issue before approving it with an overwhelming majority.

Speaking to TOI, Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental said: “The younger generation must learn the value of time and the semester system will help it realise that”.

Aimed at enhancing the quality of learning and career options for its students, the semester system, based on an accumulation of credits, will allow movement of students across universities in India and abroad.

Asked how the system would benefit DU students, Pental said: “While students from other countries who come on short-term `Study Abroad’ programmes to our university are awarded credits by their respective universities for the time spent here, our students are deprived of this. Shifting to a semester mode will allow greater exposure to those of our students who get the opportunity to study elsewhere”.

However, many teachers are not happy with the decision and earlier two ACs had to be adjourned amidst protests. According to Abha D Habibi, AC member, “Colleges like St Stephen’s, Hans Raj, Miranda House, Khalsa, LSR and Deen Dayal Upadhayay have said no to the system. We are not against the semester system, but we are also not going to be dictated by the University Grants Commission. We are opposing it on the grounds of feasibility and desirability. We are not sure how it was passed as the elected members rushed to the well of the house even before zero hour”.

Teachers are opposing the semester system because of the heterogeneity and diversity in the Delhi University system, unavailability of teaching faculty, addition of another examination, logistical problems and neglect of sports and co-curricular activities.
